This is what I call my lazy cake, a cake that is so easy to make, I make it when I don't feel like making a cake. You see, it is actually a slice, no baking involved, can be made up to 2 days earlier, so, so simple.
Below I have shown the cakes I made from this recipe, the link to the slice is shown below, then I will describe what I did when decorating the cake.
This is a cake that both kids and adults love, it is layers of biscuits and chocolate and vanilla puddings.
This is something you need to try, your guests will love you for it.
What you need:
www.whatscookingella.com/choc-vanilla-slice.html
600ml thick cream, whipped
Decorations of your choice, some ideas can be found below.
Make the choc-vanilla slice as per recipe 1-2 days in advance.
On the day the cake is needed:
Cover a cake board with wrapping paper of your choice.
Cut a sheet of baking paper the size of the choc-vanilla slice. Place on top of the choc-vanilla slice. Place your cake board on top of the baking paper on the slice, and invert your slice onto the cake board.
Whip cream until firm peaks, don't over beat, get it to a thick, fluffy stage. Spread over the entire cake.
Now decorate:
Dinosaur Island Cake
You need to buy small dinosaurs and trees.
You can either buy coloured sugar or make your own. To make your own, just put some white sugar in a snap lock bag and add a few drops of food colouring to the bag. Seal the bag shut, and rub with your fingertips the colour into the sugar. It is very easy, just don't add too much food colouring, add it in slowly, until you have the colour you need.
Sprinkle the grass (green coloured sugar) onto the whipped cream, then sprinkle on the water (blue coloured sugar).
If making the volcano: The volcano I made using a small jelly mould with a cupcake on top of it. So use anything you have, a plastic cup etc as the volcano base. Colour some whipped cream into a brown colour, mix up a few colours to achieve this (test on a small amount of cream). Cover the volcano with the brown tinted whipped cream.
Then tint some more whipped cream in a creamy-yellow colour, spread on top of the brown cream as in the picture above.
Lastly add drops of yellow and red food colouring on the top of the volcano and swirl it around to represent hot lava.
Place on your dinosaur and trees.
Refrigerate until needed.
Baby Shower Cake
When you whip the cream, add a few drops of pink colouring, then whip until thick and fluffy.
Spread over entire cake.
Buy some bath ducks, add the bath ducks to the cake (I left the ducks as a gift to the person having the baby shower). I even found baby candles for the occasion.
Refrigerate until needed.
The flowers tend to run when refrigerated, so add them just before serving otherwise the colour will bleed onto the cake.
Strawberries and Cream Cake
Sprinkle the whipped cream covered slice with hundreds and thousands (or grated chocolate).
Top with strawberries, cake is done.
Refrigerate until needed.
Number Cake
Scrape the number you need on top of the cake, so you know how it will look when cut. Cut out the number carefully.
Carefully transfer the cut cake on a cake board.
Tint 300ml cream with whatever colour you like, whip until thick and fluffy. Cover the entire cake.
Decorate by making little flowers with pink and white mini marshmallows.
My daughter loved these little figurines so added them around the cake for extra decoration.
Refrigerate until needed.
Farm Cake
You need to buy some small farm animals and fencing (if you are lucky they come in the same packet).
Sprinkle some water (blue coloured sugar) onto the cake, drinking water and/or duck pond. Sprinkle the grass (green coloured sugar) all over the remainder of the whipped cream.
I pressed on some chocolate shavings to the side of the cake.
Decorate the top with your farm animals and fence.
Refrigerate until needed.
Ninja Turtle Cake
Make choc-vanilla slice as per normal.
I decorated with some chocolate ganache piping around the cake.
Stick on the m&m number with a little ganache. Position figurines on the cake.
Refrigerate until needed.
The Ultimate Lazy Cake
I didn't even bother taking the slice out of the cake tin, hence why I called it a lazy cake.
Refrigerate until needed.
Just scatter lollies and chocolates over the cake and serve. My kids loved it.
Golf Course Cake
I bought a golf cake decorating kit on ebay. The trees I had at home.
Tint most of the whipped cream a pale green colour (for the grass), spread it over the entire cake.
Tint a little of the leftover cream blue (water).
Tint a little of the leftover cream yellow (sand).
Tint the remainder of the cream green, make it slightly darker than the green that has covered the cake (longer grass).
Spread the coloured creams on the cake as in the picture above or create your own golf course.
I made a golf bag out of a toilet roll (clean one), painted it with the birthday persons name and age. Place the golf decorating kit around the cake.
The golf balls in the water were green and yellow tic tacs.
Refrigerate until needed.
Christmas Cake
I took the slice to my mums without cream on it.
At her house I whipped the cream, spread it on the cake. Then I just sprinkled on some red and green coloured sugar to represent holly. Simple.
Refrigerate until needed.
Photo Cake
When you spread the chocolate onto the choc-vanilla slice, sprinkle it immediately with the coloured chocolate sprinkles before the chocolate sets. Leave a space large enough for your photo coloured chocolate free so it sits nicely on the cake.
Refrigerate until the chocolate sets.
Place the photo on the cake. Then stick on some chocolate balls around the photo, stick them on with a little extra melted chocolate.
Refrigerate until needed.
